Dr. Fitz received his degrees from the atmospheric science programs at Texas A&M University and Colorado State University. He obtained his Ph.D. under his mentor Dr. Bill Gray. He has taught at Jackson State University, and currently teaches at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He was also a research professor at Mississippi State Univ

He is an author or co-author of 25 peer-review publications, 2 books on hurricanes, and 6 book chapters/encyclopedia articles. He has been a PI or co-PI on numerous grants.
